Brief Places of focus for the geology of the West Coast to Taranaki
This tour will mainly concentrate on a study of the West Coast geology:
Kawhia Syncline, Alexandra volcanics to Taranaki volcanics.
(Tours may not necessarily be done in the order listed below)
Day 1:Auckland - Raglan
Franklin volcanics, Port Waikato, Ngatutura Pt (volcanics)
Accommodation at Raglan
Day 2: Raglan - Kawhia
Karioi volcano, Te Toto Gorge, Okete volcanics, Bridal Veil Falls, Lake Surprise
Accommodation at Kawhia
Day 3: Kawhia - Awakino
Kawhia Harbour, Marakopa Falls, Mangapohue Natural Stone Bridge, Kiritehere
- Monotis Fossil Beds and Waikawau beach if time permits
Accommodation at Awakino
Day 4: Awakino - Stratford
Awakino River mouth, Mokau, Tongaporutu, Mt Messenger, Inglewood lahar mounds.
Accommodation at Stratford
Day 5: Stratford - Awakino
Mt Egmont Ring Plain, Waitara - Airdale reef fossil forest & lahar deposits,
White Cliffs Pukearuhe
Accommodation at Awakino
Day 6:Awakino - Auckland
Awakino Gorge, Aria Sepentinite, Kakepuku volcano, Hamilton Basin
Return to Auckland. We will travel via Auckland airport if necessary to drop off participants.
