Waihi Beach Hawera

An Educational Natural History Tour - with Geologist Tour Leader - Murray Baker
This tour will mainly concentrate on a study of sedimentary rocks and structures .

Brief Places of focus for the Wanganui Basin Tour
Day 1: Auckland - Taihape The oldest rocks of the Wanganui Basin are in the region south of SH 49 (Ohakune to Waiouru.) This back road route goes via Bells Junction and Rangiwaea Junction

Day 2: Taihape - Wanganui
Taihape Gorge area, Rangitikei terraces, Rangitawa Stream Quaternary sediments, Wind swept coastal dunes of the of Bulls area- Brandon Hall Rd - Santoft Road parabolic dunes
Accommodation at Wanganui

Day 3: Wanganui - Wanganui
A circular route via SH 4, Raetihi, Pipiriki, Jerusalem and the Wanganui River Road
Accommodation at Wanganui

Day 4: Wanganui - Waitotara/ Patea
Landguard Bluff , the Brunswick Road section, Kai Iwi Beach, Ototoka beach
Accommodation at Waitotara /Patea

Day 5: Patea - Patea/Hawera
Waitotara Fossil Forest, Waipipi Beach Plio-Pleistocene section, Manawapou River mouth
Accommodation at Patea/Hawera

Day 6: Patea/Hawera to Auckland via / Opunake/ New Plymouth
Waihi beach, Ohawe/Inhaha beach, Opunake lahar coastal deposits and Lahar mounds

Return to Auckland
(Please note: there may be changes in the order of this program according to tide &
weather and depending on availability of accommodation)
Return to Auckland. We will travel via Auckland airport if necessary to drop off participants.

A more detailed itinerary will be sent out upon registration with a receipt
Information for pickup, a reading list and accommodation addresses.
Although this tour originates and finishes in Auckland, it is possible to join it on D1 in Taupo or Ohakune and leave it on D6 in New Plymouth or other location on SH3. Also if you wish to join for selected days this can be arranged too at negotiated rates.
