Brief Places of focus
for the geology of Central Plateau, Tongariro Ruapehu & Taupo
Day 1:Auckland - Turangi
(We
will travel via Auckland airport if necessary to collect participants.)
Our route via the Hauraki graben follows the old Taupo road along the
Waikato River Terraces to begin over the various volcanic deposits,
Tauhara volcano, Taupo volcano, Taupo ash phases.
Accommodation at Turangi.
Day 2: Turangi
- Ohakune
Tree Trunk Gorge, Taupo ash deposits of the Desert Road Tongariro ring
plain ash deposits Tongariro complex of Andesite volcanoes, Tangiwai
lahar deposits, Ohakune craters, Lahar deposits at Horopito
Accommodation at Turangi.
Day 3:Turangi
- National Park
Ruapehu lahar mounds, Iwikau village, Ruapehu lahar deposits;
Whakapapaiti, Whakapapanui ring plain deposits and Te Whaiau
pyroclastic deposits of Tongariro
Accommodation at Turangi.
Day 4:Turangi
- Auckland
Lahar deposits of the Tongariro River, Tokannu mudpools, Mangakino
ignimbrites
Waipapa Lake route back to Auckland.

Return to Auckland.
We will travel via Auckland airport if necessary to drop off
participants.
(Please note: there may be changes in the order of this program
according to weather)
