Brief Places of focus
for the geology of the Hawkes Bay
This tour will study topography, faults, sedimentary rock and
deformation
in Hawkes Bay to give an insight into the recent geological processes .
(Tours may not necessarily be done in the order listed
below)
Day 1: Auckland - Turangi
(We will travel to Auckland airports if necessary to collect
participants.)
The route through to Taupo from Auckland will be different on return.
We will travel via the Waikato & Central plateau on route through to
Turangi, taking time to see some volcanic features on route.
Accommodation overnight at Turangi.
Day 2: Turangi
- Napier
Turangi - Hastings -Havelock North area via Gentle Annie that starts
near Taihape.Moawhango Valley, Rangitikei River, Kurapapango, Blowhard
karst reserve, Hawke's Bay Panorama.
Accommodation at Napier
Day 3:
Napier Return via Havelock North
Clifton, Cape Kidnappers Walk, Te Mata Peak
Accommodation at Napier
Day 4:Napier
return
Waimarama Beach, Inland Ranges, Kairakau, Pourerere via Havelock.
Accommodation at Napier
Day 5:
Napier return
Waipukurau area - Lindsay Rd, Marakeke Rd fossil sites, Lake Poukawa,
Tukituki River, Kahuranaki view
Hawke's Bay Earthquake Napier, Winery Visit
Accommodation at Napier
Day 6:Napier
to Auckland via Taupo
Ahuriri Lagoon, Lake Tutira, Devil's Elbow, the 'Organs',
Titiokura, Waipunga Falls, Tauhara Volcano view, Waipapa Dam
Return to Auckland. We will travel via Auckland airport
if necessary to drop off participants.
