Rocks are a form of chemical and mystery
Mixed up and brewed over aeons in history
Sedimentary, igneous (plutonic and volcanic)
Have names to confuse a new rockomanic!
The metamorphic style has been squashed and beaten
Or boiled and baked where earth is a-heatin'.
Pressure building up causes marvels full of wonder
Or earthshaking tremors and volcanic thunder.
Feldspars abound - the earth has lots of these -
Silica, aluminium - and a pinch of something please.
Try potassium and sodium - a good sort of mix.
Or sodium and calcium, and crystals start to fix.
Marble is found where limestone metamorphosed.
Greywacke sediments - the Southern Alps exposed!
Granite, obsidian, iron sands and gold -
Each of these and more have stories to be told.
Whatever they're all called by geologic guys
They're a constant source of wonder to brand new eyes!
All sorts of textures, great colours, crystals neat -
but the diamond on my finger is hard to beat!
