6 Day Tour

Mercury Bay

An Educational Natural History Tour - with Geologist Tour Leader - Murray Baker
This field trip will mainly concentrate on a study of various igneous and sedimentary rocks of the Coromandel Peninsula.
As we explore we will see beautiful rugged coast, dense rainforest bush and old gold mining areas.
(Tour usually offered as a weekday tour Monday through to Saturday)

Brief Places of focus for the Geology Coromandel Peninsula

Day 1:Auckland - Whangamata via Paeroa
(We will travel via Auckland airport if necessary to collect participants.)
Miranda Chenier Terraces and Miranda Trust Bird Centre, Hauraki Plains, Owharoa Falls, Martha Mine - Waihi, Whiritoa, Waimama Bay.
Accommodation at Whangamata .

Day 2: Whangamata - Tairua
Onemana rhyolites and sinter, Pauanui shore platform, Paku- rhyolite dome volcano, Te Karo sinter
Accommodation at Tairua.

Day 3:Tairua - return to Tairua
Shakespeare cliffs ignimbrite, Flaxmill Bay, Hahei, Hot Water Beach fault.

Day 4:Tairua - Coromandel
Whangapoua, New Chums beach, Waitete Bay

Day 5:Coromandel return to Coromandel
Paritu "Coromandel granites" pluton, Port Jackson and Fletcher Bay

Day 6:Coromandel - Auckland
Pukewhakataratara volcanic lahar deposits and greywacke of Kirita Hill, Kereta - Tapu to Thames Coast.
Return to Auckland.

We will travel via Auckland airport if necessary to drop off participants.
(Please note: there may be changes in the order of this program according to weather or other conditions such as road works)
